Fused Magnesia (MgO) is manufactured by the electric arc melting of caustic calcined magnesia, dead burned magnesia or raw magnesite in furnaces. The temperature must be above 2750°C for an optimal product. Fused Magnesia has a better performance than competing materials due to its altered crystalline structure.

The refractory industry uses these basic refractories for different lining purposes in electric arc furnaces and kilns. Basic refractory bricks are used to make ramming mass composition, fettling material, and magnesite mortar. This is also a coating material for steel splashing in arc furnaces.
